Carving pumpkins—aka the iconic jack-o’-lantern tradition—goes way back to old Irish folklore. The OG spooky gourd wasn’t even a pumpkin—it was a turnip. Legend tells of a sneaky man named Stingy Jack who tricked the Devil and was cursed to roam the Earth with only a carved-out turnip lantern to light his way. When Irish immigrants came to America, they found pumpkins were way easier to carve (and less tragic-looking), so the tradition stuck. Today, jack-o’-lanterns guard our porches, scare off evil spirits, and give us one more reason to stab something in October.
